Resilience ( Meltdown Recovery)

Today's simple resilience technique gives kids explicit instructions to help them 'calm' down post meltdown or outburst.
We tend to tell our kids to calm down without ever giving them explicit tools and instructions to do so.
I am so guilty of this at times and today's challenge is a really good reminder to be explicit and take it step by step.....literally.
So today's resilience technique is a grounding exercise.
Post meltdown strategies:
- Ask your child to walk around their space & touch 3 things that are blue
- Touch 4 things that are smooth, rough, soft, hard etc
- Look out the window to see 3 things that are ......(colour)
- Touch their Head, Eyes, Ears, Mouth
quick, simple and effective in restoring the fight and flight response ( Amygdala)
Taming the beast
I’t wasn’t the harping, begging, crying, screaming for the chocolate that set your child’s meltdown off.
They were not being spoilt, rude, ill- mannered
It was the amygdala that made them do it …….
Learn to tame it, taking 3 deep breaths, drinking a sip of water, using the senses through a grounding technique and finding one ‘good’ thing that happened today, and you are most definitely on your way to taming the beast…. and raising resilient preschoolers while you are at it!
